Spelling BeeOver the past few weeks, students in grades 5–8 from Carrigan through Bailey Middle School held their own spelling bees, with 12 winners advancing to a final competition held today at West Haven High School in the Pamela B. Gardner Lecture Hall. After a series of rounds, 8th grader Destiny Davis of Bailey Middle School was crowned champion and will now advance to the Scripps Spelling Bee Regionals later this March at Hoffman Auditorium in West Hartford. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a nationwide competition, with school champions competing at regional, state, and national levels.

With Superintendent of West Haven Public Schools Neil C. Cavallaro serving as guest reader, judges and staff were present to recognize all participants. Champion or not, these students represent the top 12 spellers out of more than 2,000 students across their grade levels, which is a notable accomplishment.
