On Friday, May 2, 2025, the South Central Area Superintendents Association (SCASA) held its annual Award Recognition Program Luncheon in Waterbury, CT. Six outstanding students from West Haven Public Schools were honored at the event, representing Carrigan Intermediate School, Bailey Middle School, and West Haven High School, with two students from each school.
The awards recognized students for their exceptional community service and service to others, academic achievement, and leadership within their school communities.
Congratulations to all the students for their remarkable accomplishments and positive impact!
Ryan Stewart
Grade 6
Carrigan Intermediate School
Ryan Stewart is an extremely bright and personable young woman. This gymnast and basketball player also plays the clarinet as a member of the Carrigan school band. She truly is a role model for the entire school. Ryan loves her Humanities class and is an active member of The Carrigan Enrichment Academy (T.A.G.). Ryan would like to attend Quinnipiac in the future to study Marine Biology. In a brief period of time, Ryan has become a valued member of Carrigan school.
Dane Walsh
Grade 6
Carrigan Intermediate School
The voice of Carrigan School's morning announcements, Dane Walsh is a friendly, respectful, and responsible sixth grader with a great sense of humor. Outside of school, he plays hockey and baseball. Dane has been selected as a Caring Cougar and really loves his Math and Physical Education classes. With Dane's maturity, he is ready to make the move to middle school and beyond - following in his older brother's footsteps to West Haven High School. Dane credits his great family - especially Mom and Dad - for being his role models and the reason he works so hard on his studies.
Abbey Forsyth
Grade 8
Bailey Middle School
Abbey is an outstanding student at Bailey Middle School. She is a National Junior Honor Society member and has not received a grade lower than an A in her two years at Bailey. Abbey has not only excelled academically, but her involvement in a variety of extracurriculars is equally impressive. Abbey is a member of the school's Green Thumb Club which brightens up the teacher's classrooms with flowers. She is also part of the Bailey Drama Club and works at the Bailey Boutique, our school store. During Bailey's Open House Night in the fall, Abbey volunteered to assist parents in teacher's classrooms for a meet and greet. Recently, Abbey volunteered at a Math Night at one of our town's elementary schools. Outside of school, Abbey has been taking dance at Top Hat for 9 years and has also taught students how to dance from the ages of 2 to 9 for the last few years. She has volunteered at a Tiny Tots Camp over the summer. She is an invaluable member of the Bailey community and has a bright future ahead of her.
Zach Levy
Grade 8
Bailey Middle School
Zach is an active member of the Bailey Middle School community. He is a photographer for the Bailey Yearbook. He loves working on technical things and enjoys researching sports history or news stories. Being a hockey player, he enjoys learning about events in the sporting world. Zach was born in Philadelphia, moved to North Carolina for a while, and now lives in West Haven, CT. While at home with his two cats and one dog, he likes to sleep, draw, and talk to friends. If he has the time, he enjoys watching NASCAR. Zach is a dedicated scholar who takes pride in his schoolwork.
Emily Guthrie
Grade 12
West Haven High School
Emily has been an active and integral part of the community during her four years at West Haven High School. With an outstanding 4.12 cumulative GPA in a rigorous academic curriculum, Emily has also participated in numerous activities including being a member of the Model UN, the Academic Integrity Committee, and was chosen as a Peer Advocate her senior year. Emily is a scholar athlete who participates in swimming and golf and has worked hard to contribute to her individual and team success. Additionally, Emily has a passion for helping children and youth in the community and has served as a swim coach for several years and even became certified as a USA Junior Swim coach. She also volunteers annually at the elementary schools in West Haven where she enjoys spending time working with young children in after school programs. In her free time, she enjoys shopping, going to the beach, and driving around with her friends. Emily plans to double major in Accounting and Finance when she begins college in the Fall.
Logan Truncone
Grade 12
West Haven High School
Logan is a dedicated and well-rounded student who has earned high honors throughout his academic career, maintaining an impressive weighted 4.7 GPA. His commitment to excellence is reflected in his induction into the National Junior Honor Society and receiving the prestigious Presidential Award. Logan consistently challenges himself by enrolling in honors and AP courses. Beyond the classroom, Logan is an active member of the school community. He played baseball and competed on the track team, displaying his athleticism and teamwork. Logan volunteers during mayoral elections, assists elderly residents at a local retirement home, and helps clean up local sports fields. Additionally, he serves as a peer tutor in his math class, offering his skills to support classmates. Logan's dedication to academics, athletics, leadership, and service makes him a standout student and has a positive influence in his school and community. Logan will be attending UCONN in the fall and plans on majoring in Civil Engineering.
