Carrigan's First Annual Black History Celebration was held on February 22, 2019. The event was organized by Ms. Dora Barnes with assistance from Ms. Portia Bias and several other staff members. Fifth and Sixth grade TAG students wrote biographies which were read by other students. Mr. Shawn Brown was the Emcee, and provided information on the history of Black History Month along with facts about some of the people who are associated with Black History Month. West Haven High School's Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Phyllis Silver, opened the program by singing the Black National Anthem. Ms. Anne Marie LaMotta, along with Mr. Greg Benn, led a group of student drummers and singers in a traditional African song, "Kye, Kye, Kule," and "Rhythm" ("Ku Ku"). Ms. Yvonne Daniels directed the West Haven High School Major Steppers as they performed several numbers. Mrs. Latanya Joyner read the poem "
Human Family" by Maya Angelou and read a brief biography of the poet. Students were introduced to Jimmy Williams, a boxer who won the WBC US Welterweight belt. Mr. Williams works with students at West Haven High School.
