6th Grade Band

For the 2017-2018 school year, I will be teaching 6th Grade Intermediate & Beginner Band at Carrigan Intermediate School. The instruments I teach include: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and the percussion family. Students meet with me once a week for small group lessons on their instruments. The method book that all students use is Accent On Achievement - Book 1.

Beginner 6th Grade students will be learning the basics of instrumental music. These include forming the correct embouchure for their instruments, holding drum sticks properly, learning various pitches and rhythms, learning how to read sheet music properly, and learning the history and background behind musical pieces and their composers.

Intermediate 6th Grade students will continue to build on their skills from last year. Students will learn new pitches, fingerings, scales, and perform more advanced music repertoire. Percussion students will learn about and perform on more diverse percussion instruments such as timpani, congas, bongos, timbales, and various other percussion instruments from around the world.

Band students are recommended to practice a minimum of 15 minutes a day. Their practice time must be recorded in their practice records (located in the back of the method book) and signed by a parent/guardian each week. Click here for a more complete list of rules, regulations and expectations in band class.

There are two major performances for the bands each year. There is a Winter Concert in January and a Spring Concert in May. Additionally, Intermediate Band students may also be having performances outside of school (such as the Fine Arts Festival and the Memorial Day Parade).

Parents, please read this article: Why Students Really Quit Their Musical Instrument (and How Parents Can Prevent It) by Grammy nominated music educator Anthony Mazzocchi.

I have been singing and playing percussion instruments for nearly 20 years. I hold both a B.S. Degree ('08) and an M.S. Degree ('13) in Music Education from Western Connecticut State University

I previously studied percussion under the guidance of Anthony DeQuattro and David Smith. I have been teaching music in the West Haven Public Schools system since 2008.

When I'm not teaching, I do a lot of performing on voice and percussion with ensembles such as the jazz group The Isabella Mendes Quartet, the ska band For Serious, or Carrigan School's very own teacher band: The Sporx. When I'm not teaching or performing, my hobbies include history, traveling, scary movies, and cycling.
