Two schools receive interim leaders

WEST HAVEN, Dec. 2, 2013 — Carrigan Intermediate School and Seth G. Haley Elementary School saw two new administrators at the helm on Monday.

With Haley Principal Ron Stancil going on leave for being temporarily totally disabled, AmyJo Palermo has been moved from her assistant principal job at Carrigan to become Haley’s interim principal. As a result, Twana Shirden is changing from Carrigan’s reading specialist to its interim assistant principal. Shirden and Palermo are expected to fill in for several months, possibly through the end of the school year.

Memos were sent home at the end of November to notify parents of the changes.

Superintendent Neil C. Cavallaro, who made the appointments, said Palermo has helped create a close-knit community at Carrigan and is a proven leader who is ready to take on any challenge that arises. He added that Shirden has worked tirelessly with Carrigan’s students to help them improve literacy skills and will be an asset to the district’s team of administrators.

“Their talent and passion for education have not gone unnoticed, and I’m pleased we’re able to fill these top positions with such capable leaders who will, no doubt, leave their own mark on the schools,” Cavallaro said. “They will be working with staff, students and parents to ensure a seamless transition.”

Cavallaro said he appreciates Stancil’s dedication to the district’s students and efforts to instill in them a love of reading and art. Stancils efforts are exemplified throughout the school, as student-made mosaics hang in the hallway, and a large mural promoting reading covers the wall of another wing.

“We wish Ron well and hope he has a full recovery so that he can get back to Seth Haley. We will make sure things run smoothly at the school in his absence,” Cavallaro said.

Prior to working at Carrigan, Palermo taught at the former Anna V. Molloy Elementary School and served as the district coordinator of math and professional development. Palermo, who attended West Haven Public Schools, including Seth Haley, said one of her top priorities is getting to know her students by spending time on the playground and in the classroom.

This is Shirden’s third year with the West Haven School District, as she was hired in 2011 as a reading specialist at Savin Rock Community School. Prior to coming to West Haven, she was a reading specialist for kindergarten through 12th grade at Cooperative Educational Services in Trumbull, a first-grade teacher in Stratford, and a second- and third-grade teacher in Bridgeport. She said she’s honored to have the opportunity to enhance teaching and learning at Carrigan and joins Principal Frank Paolino and Assistant Principal Rich Weber in the main office.
