Carrigan 5th-grader wins district spelling bee; competes at Quinnipiac in March

The bee was the longest we've had in years and lasted 24 rounds with 91 words, including "hodgepodge," "arboreal," "braille," "epoxy," "patrician," "esplanade," and "commodious."

Arin will now move on to the regional bee at Quinnipiac University next month.

The runner-up was Ayannah Obas, also a Carrigan fifth-grader. Our other competitors were Coogan Cardella and Gianna Ruiz, grade 6, Carrigan, and Dev Patel and A'nh Ngyen, grade 7, and Mia Silva and Maura Dowd, grade 8, Bailey.

Winners received Barnes and Noble gift cards, which were donated by the PTA Council.
